Michael LoschAssociate Professor Art History
Awarded the 1999 McDaniel College Distinguished Teaching Award, Michael Losch, was recognized for initiating students into the marvels of both Western and Non-Western art. After completing his doctoral studies in 19th Century French painting and the art of Paul Cezanne, for the past ten years he redirected the focus of his interests.
His areas of specialization now include Islamic art, the art of the American Indian, and the art and cultures of Africa. For two summers he has traveled to the northwest coast, British Columbia and New Mexico to meet with Native American artists, including spending several days with Navajo and Hopi families. He also visited ruins, canyons and sacred sites, incorporating his discoveries into his course on traditional Native American arts.
His scholarly pursuits have also led him to examine the relationship between art and literature and have resulted in several published articles and papers delivered at conferences at Harvard and Emory universities. mlosch@mcdaniel.edu
