Curriculum
In addition to the Communication major, there is a Communication minor, a Film and Video Studies minor, and dual majors with Art, English, Foreign Languages, Sociology, and Theater (for a full description of the dual majors, please consult the McDaniel College catalog).  The major consists of eleven courses for a total of 44 credit hours. Please view the following guides:

Generally, students take two introductory courses (Interpersonal Communication and Mass Communication) to begin their studies.  The Interpersonal course focuses on communication at the individual and group levels, and the Mass Communication course focuses on communication at the societal and global levels.  Both courses provide a broad overview of the primary areas of study within the discipline.

There are two research methods courses, which provide students with the skills needed to conduct Communication research.   The Qualitative Research Methods course focuses on how research is conducted from the interpretive and critical analyses perspectives.  Conversely, Quantitative Research Methods focuses on the statistical and experimental approach to conducting research.

Beginning in their junior year, students take four upper level courses that focus on specific areas of Communication.  The Department offers a variety of upper level courses that reflect notable areas of study within the discipline.

Students must also take two elective courses, which are designed to supplement a student’s Communication studies.  Some of the elective courses are offered by the Department, whereas other courses are available in other disciplines.

During their senior year, students complete a Senior Seminar project, which represents the culmination of their Communication studies.  The project is an independent research pursuit that consists of either a qualitative study, a quantitative study, or a short documentary.  The project is presented in a formal setting, and all presentations are open to the College community.
