- Margaret Louise Lau ’28, of Mitchellville, celebrated her 100th birthday on Dec. 20. The former basketball, tennis and volleyball player still fondly remembers her days as a college athlete.
Margaret Louise Lau ’28, of Mitchellville, celebrated her 100th birthday on Dec. 20. The former basketball, tennis and volleyball player still fondly remembers her days as a college athlete.
“She always smiles when I mention her college accomplishments,” says her son Richard Lau. “Although her studies centered on Mathematics and English, her fondest memories are of those in the sports arena.”
As a centennial birthday gift, the McDaniel Athletics department sent her a photo of the current women’s basketball team and a T-shirt.
“We coaches believe the athletic experience is something players will cherish over the course of their lives,” says women’s basketball coach Rebecca Martin. “This is the litmus test of how important it truly is. Margaret reached her 100th birthday, and some of her best memories revolve around athletics on the Hill.”
After graduating from what was then Western Maryland College, Lau taught science at Pocomoke High school, and then went on to work for the Naval Reasearch Lab and I.B.M. Eventually, she served as an Aerospace Technologist for NASA, where she tracked the locations of satellites, including the Russian Sputnik.
Lau has five children, 20 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
