First-year student becomes mentor
- Each Tuesday started the same way, with Stephen Sauve ’11 kicking a ball around the playground at an Annapolis community center with the Traveling Tuesday volunteer group. Soon, a child or two would snatch the ball away, and the fun would officially start. Kids were everywhere, jumping on Sauve’s back, holding their hands over his eyes and getting a wild ride as he stumbled around.

As a volunteer with the Traveling Tuesday group this past summer, the English major led activities including basketball, baseball, kickball and dodge ball every Tuesday in a low-income Annapolis neighborhood for youths ages four to 13.

“My high school, the Annapolis Area Christian School, encouraged us to go out and serve other people,” says Sauve. “It taught me to look beyond my own needs.”

Sauve has participated in homeless drives and a walk benefiting kids in Africa. At McDaniel, he is a member of 11 clubs and was recently elected class president. Although he spent the summer biking and logging miles on the track in preparation for ROTC, Sauve says the kids wore him out each week and left a lasting impression.

“It was tough telling them I had to leave,” he said. “They always looked forward to Tuesday and asked if I’d be coming back next week to play. I’ll definitely be back next summer.”
