McDaniel College has long recognized the importance of students giving of themselves to others. Our First Principles states “…liberally educated men and women…take their place in the global community, understanding their responsibilities to aid individuals and to contribute to the larger society.” Since 1867 the community at McDaniel College has been giving back through both community service and philanthropic opportunities on campus, on a local level, on a national level, and on a global level.
McDaniel College has over 100 clubs and organizations on campus, most of which are committed to serving the greater good. Some of these groups include Alpha Phi Omega, Best Buddies, Heroes Helping Hopkins, Environmental Action Club and all fraternal organizations. With all of these clubs committed to service there are endless opportunities to help others.
Each week this page will highlight various members of the McDaniel College Community that have made a difference by giving of themselves. This week we highlight:
Alpha Phi Omega

Alpha Phi Omega was founded on three principles: leadership, service and friendship. Each semester they sponsor a variety of activities include planting trees in the local area, going to SERVV international, a non-profit organization, which promotes the social and economic progress of people in developing regions of the world by purchasing and marketing their crafts and goods and taking to the Children's House in Baltimore and cook dinner for sick children and their families. Members are required to complete 10 hours each semester through the multiple projects sponsored by the group or on their own. Each spring the group travels to a conference where students from a myriad of colleges gather to attend seminars about leadership and do one big community service project. Last year, they went to Washington D.C. and helped clean trash off the Lincoln Memorial.
“I joined Alpha Phi Omega because I really wanted to get involved in something that helps people. We are dedicated to helping others and leading others to help others. I have made so many friends and strengthened other friendships while being a member of this organization—all through helping others. It is a rewarding and amazing feeling to know that I can make a difference”
