Washington holds on to down McDaniel 3-2 in conference opener

 
 
 
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Danielle Rosato tallied twice to lead Washington (Md.) to a 3-2 victory over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey opener for both teams on Sunday.
            The Shorewomen (2-1, 1-0 CC) held a slim 9-8 edge in shots to earn their second consecutive victory over the Green Terror (0-2, 0-1 CC), who finished with a 10-9 advantage in penalty corners.
            Knotted at 1-all, Rosato tallied her second goal of the day at the 42:12 mark.
            Nearly17 minutes later, Amy Spadanuta pushed the advantage to 3-1, dribbling by a defender off a penalty corner and hitting the backboard from 15 yards out.
            Lindsay Riordon (Monkton, Md./Hereford) finished a long Brooke Dixon (Clayton, Del./Smyrna) send in from the top of the arc for her first collegiate goal, trimming the deficit to 3-2 with 5:34 to play.
            Rosato opened the scoring, converting at the 18:50 mark for the lone goal of the first half.
            Off a corner just 3:55 into the second half, Dixon send a ball in from the top that Jamie Smith (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) redirected to Michelle Fluty (Huntingtown, Md./Calvert) to even the game.
            Erika Wawzyanick (Wantage, N.J./High Point Regional) finished with three saves for McDaniel while Elena Nicholoff had two for Washington.
            McDaniel returns to action at St. Mary’s (Md.) on Tuesday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
