McDaniel downs Haverford to match best start in program history
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Robert Koebke (Silver Spring, Md./St. Johns) netted a career high-tying 12 points to lead McDaniel to a 55-52 victory over Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Saturday.
With the victory the Green Terror (5-0, 2-0 CC) match its best start in program history, equaling the 5-0 start put together by the 1962-63 squad.
Chaz Thomas led the Fords (2-5, 1-1 CC) with 21 points while Mike Fratangelo added 11.
In a game mired with seven ties and 10 lead changes, a Chad Arrington (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown) tip-in with 14:30 to play gave McDaniel a lead it would not relinquish.
After Ray Panek tied the game for the final time at 32-all, Koebke hit a 3-pointer to spark a 15-6 run that gave the Green Terror its largest lead of the game at 48-38 with 6:01 to play.
However, Haverford was not done. Two Fratangelo free throws with 59.8 seconds left and a basket-and-foul play by Fratangelo with 18.6 showing trimmed the deficit to 53-52.
Two T.J. Odunlami (Columbia, Md./Atholton free throws with 13.7 seconds on the clock stretched the lead back to three and set the final margin.
Odunlami opened the scoring with a layup 38 seconds into the game before the Fords rattled off the next six points to build a 6-2 advantage with 15:05 to play in the opening half.
A Brent Anderson layup with 12:53 showing stretched the lead to 8-3 before a Brett Foelber (Sykesville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) layup and five straight points from Koebke gave McDaniel a 10-8 lead.
The two teams traded the lead six times over the final 9:59 of the stanza en route to a 27-all deadlock at halftime.
Layups by Panek and Fratangelo out of the intermission gave Haverford a 31-27 lead but a Ryan Finch (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon) jumper and one Arrington free throw pulled the hosts within one before they took the lead for good.
Chris Prior (Westminster, Md./Westminster) added 11 points for the Green Terror while Odunlami added a career-best 10.
On a night when McDaniel made just 14 field goals and shot 36.8 percent from the floor, the Green Terror connected on 22 of 28 free-throw attempts, including 6-for-6 showings from Odunlami and Koebke.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Dickinson on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
