McDaniel opens new year same way it ended old one, downs St. Mary’s
ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – Brett Foelber (Sykesville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) recorded 14 points to lead all scorers and help McDaniel to a 68-48 victory at St. Mary’s (Md.) in non-conference men’s basketball action on Thursday.
After snapping its first two-game skid of the season with a 25-point victory over Hobart three days before the end of 2007, the Green Terror (8-2) made it two straight – and three overall – 20-point wins on the third day of 2008.
Tyson Lesesne, who entered the game averaging 18.4 points per contest, tallied 12 points to lead the Seahawks (7-5), who were held to a season-low 48 points after entering the night at a Capital Athletic Conference-best 84.9 points per game. St. Mary’s hadn’t been held to fewer than 70 in a contest prior McDaniel’s best defensive effort of the season.
After seeing a seven-point advantage disappear into a 17-all deadlock with 6:19 remaining in the first half, the Green Terror put together a 26-6 run over the next 11 minutes, 4 seconds to open up a 20-point lead.
Triples from Steve Wilson (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) and Miguel Jones (Baltimore, Md./North County) sparked the run while six of Kevin Henry’s (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) eight points turned a 25-21 edge into a 31-23 halftime lead.
Baskets from five different McDaniel players accounted for the first 12 points of the second half.
After the Seahawks trimmed the deficit to 49-39 with 6:52 showing, the Green Terror reeled off the next 10 points to push the lead back to 20 just 2 minutes, 25 seconds later.
Ryan Ficnch (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon) chipped in 12 points for McDaniel while Chad Arrington (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown) reached double figures in the rebounding column for the seventh time this season with 10 boards.
Richard Barry (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial), making his second consecutive start, dished out five assists.
The Green Terror puts its 3-0 Centennial Conference record on the line at Muhlenberg on Wednesday. Game time is 8 p.m.
