WESTMISNTER, Md. – John Noonan netted a game-high 20 points to lead six Ursinus players in double figures in an 80-73 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Saturday.
The Bears (11-2, 6-0 CC), who entered the game second in the conference in field goal percentage at .482, became the second consecutive team to shoot better than 60 percent from the field on the Green Terror (8-4, 3-2 CC), connecting on 62.8 percent of their shots, including 11 of 16 from behind the 3-point arc.
Chris Prior (Westminster, Md./Westminster) led McDaniel with his second straight double-double, recording 13 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Henry (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) tallied a career-best 15 points.
Trailing 14-13 on a Robert Koebke (Silver Spring, Md./St. Johns) at the 12:40 mark, Matt Hilton responded with the first of his four triples to give Ursinus the lead for good.
The Bears stretched the lead to as large as 36-24 with 3:11 to play in the first half but, behind four points from Chad Arrington (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown), the Green Terror put together an 8-0 run to close to within four before Nick Shattuck, who finished with 16 points, hit a layup with six seconds remaining in the half to make it a 38-32 advantage at halftime.
Trailing 69-59 with 4:56 to play, Ryan Finch (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon) hit baskets on consecutive possessions to trim the deficit to six.
A Miguel Jones (Baltimore, Md./North County) pull-up 3-pointer from the top of the key with 15.3 seconds on the clock drew McDaniel within 77-73 but Ursinus hit three of its four free-throw attempts in the final seconds to remain undefeated in CC play.
Behind five points from Finch and four from Henry, the Green Terror jumped out to a 9-4 lead.
Trailing 11-6, Shattuck hit a 3-pointer with 14:03 to play in the opening half and Matt Brundage, who finished with 10 points off the bench, hit layups on consecutive possessions to give the Bears their first lead.
Hilton finished with 17 points while Remy Cousart added 12 to round out double-digit scorers for Ursinus.
