Washington holds on to defeat McDaniel, 73-66
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Todd Green tallied a game-high 21 points to lead Washington (Md.) to a 73-66 victory over visiting McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Wednesday.
Kevin Henry (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) recorded 15 points to lead the Green Terror (9-5, 4-3 CC), who erased a 15-point second-half deficit but could not complete its first win in Chestertown since 1982.
Tim Kohlrus and Alan Kines also reached double figures for the Shoremen (4-10, 1-6 CC) with 19 and 10 points, respectively.
Trailing 50-35 after a James Whall dunk that forced a McDaniel timeout with 12:47 to play, the Green Terror responded with an 11-0 to pull within 50-46 just 3 minutes, 15 seconds later.
With 4:40 to play, two Chris Prior (Westminster, Md./Westminster) free throws capped a 21-5 run that gave McDaniel its first lead of the game, 56-55.
After a second tie and five more lead changes, Green hit his second 3-pointer of the game to give Washington a 62-60 lead that it would not relinquish.
Clinging to a 67-66 lead after a Prior three-point play, the Shoremen converted all six free throws in the waning seconds to secure its first conference win of the season.
Kines opened the game with a 3-pointer to spark a fast start that saw Washington build an 18-9 advantage midway through the period en route to a 35-24 halftime advantage.
In the half, the Shoremen converted 14 McDaniel turnovers into 18 points to build their lead.
Washington slowly stretched the lead to 50-35 before the late rally from McDaniel.
Robert Koebke (Silver Spring, Md./St. Johns) and Prior each added 10 points for the Green Terror.
McDaniel returns to action at Haverford on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
