Defense keys McDaniel’s 59-56 win at Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – Brett Foelber (Sykesville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) registered all 15 of his points in the second half to lead McDaniel to a 59-56 victory over Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Wednesday.
Miguel Jones (Baltimore, Md./North County) tallied a game-high 16 points to lead the Green Terror (11-5, 6-3 CC), who held the Blue Jays (9-7, 5-4 CC) to 14 points through the first 15 minutes, 4 seconds of the second half, turning a 28-24 halftime deficit into a 51-42 lead.
Pat O’Connell led Johns Hopkins with 15 points while Scott Weisenfeld went 4-for-4 from the field and 4-for-4 from the line for 12 points off the bench.
With 46.8 seconds showing, Jones drove down lane for the basket-and-foul to stretch the lead back to 54-50, snapping an 8-0 Blue Jay run in the process.
After a Johns Hopkins timeout with 40.8 seconds on the clock, Weisenfeld pulled up for a short jumper in the lane to pull the hosts within two with 30.6 seconds on the clock.
Jones and Weisenfeld exchanged free throws over the next 10 seconds before Foelber sank two free throws at the 18.6-second mark to re-establish the four-point edge.
Kevin Roach laid home a Weisenfeld pass on the ensuing rush upcourt to pull the Blue Jays within 58-56 with 13.1 seconds to play.
A second-and-a-half later, Jones missed the first before hitting the second to make it a three-point game.
After a JHU timeout with 5.4 seconds on the clock, Polster’s last-ditch attempt rimmed out to give the Green Terror its first back-to-back wins in Baltimore since 1983 and 1985.
Behind five points from Kevin Henry (Potomac, Md./Bullis School), McDaniel built a 14-4 lead just 6:17 into the game.
A John Alberici basket just over a minute later sparked an 18-3 Blue Jay run over the next 9 minutes, 21 seconds, building a five-point lead and holding the Green Terror without a field goal during the span.
Chris Prior (Westminster, Md./Westminster) led the way on the boards with 11 rebounds.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
