Gettysburg squeezes out 66-65 victory over McDaniel

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Dan Capkin netted 22 points, including bookending a 10-minute, 14-second scoring drought from the floor to help force overtime in Gettysburg’s 66-65 Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball victory over McDaniel on Wednesday.

Brett Foelber (Sykesville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) tallied a game-high 25 points and added 15 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive end, to pace the Green Terror (12-6, 7-4 CC), who played its second overtime game in as many contests.

Andrew Powers (14), Joe Spierenburg (11) and Corey Dorsey (10) all reached double figures for the Bullets (14-3, 9-2 CC), who secured their stranglehold on second place in the CC standings.

After Capkin drained a 3-pointer with 10:30 to play to put Gettysburg on top 52-48 before the Bullets missed their next nine field-goal attempts, allowing McDaniel to build a 60-55 advantage with 1:18 showing.

After two Spierenburg free throws with a minute on the clock trimmed the deficit to three, Capkin swished his fourth trey of the game over a defender to knot the game at 60 with 15.6 seconds on the clock.

Nearly a minute into overtime, Spierenburg put back his own miss before Foelber responded with a triple to give McDaniel a 63-62 edge.

After a Powers layup, Ryan Finch (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon) nailed a pair of free throws for the sixth tie and ninth lead change of the game with 3:12 to play.

Chris Nevolo, who finished with four points, made his final two the most important giving Gettysburg a one-point lead with 2:50 remaining before the two teams combined to miss the final eight shots of the game.

The Bullets steadily built a 21-14 lead through the first 12:33 of the first half.

Trailing by as many as eight after a Powers 3-pointer with 4:56 remaining until intermission, the Green Terror tallied 10 of the half’s final 12 points, including a Miguel Jones (Baltimore, Md./North County) triple to just beat the halftime buzzer and knot the game at 29.

After five lead changes and a pair of ties in the first 8:24 of the second half, Kevin Kennedy tipped-home a Capkin miss and Capkin responded to a Foelber layup to give the Bullets a four-point advantage.

Each team made 24 field goals in the game. However, McDaniel needed 81 attempts (.296) while it took Gettysburg just 50 attempts (.480).

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Muhlenberg on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
