McDaniel downs Washington, clinches first playoff berth since 1995
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Chris Prior (Westminster, Md./Westminster) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds to lead McDaniel to a 74-67 victory over Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Saturday.
Ryan Finch (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon) added 16 points for the Green Terror (15-8, 10-6 CC) who notched its first postseason berth since 1995. With a win against Johns Hopkins on Wednesday, McDaniel can clinch the No. 3 seed in the upcoming CC tournament at Ursinus on Mar. 1-2.
Alan Kines recorded a game-high 17 points to lead four players in double figures for the Shoremen (4-19, 1-14 CC), who dropped their ninth straight contest.
Knotted at 11 after four ties and four lead changes in the first 9:36 of the game, Miguel Jones (Baltimore, Md./North County) hit the first of back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 21-8 run over the next 4 minutes, 16 seconds to give the Green Terror its largest advantage of the game.
Still trailing 42-30 with just shy of two minutes remaining in the first half, Tim Kohlrus hit a short jumper to key a 6-1 burst to the locker room and pull the visitors within 43-36 at the intermission.
Two Kines free throws trimmed the deficit to 47-45 with 3:34 elapsed in the second half before a Prior basket-and-foul ignited a 12-2 stretch to stretch the lead back to double figures with 13:21 to play but Washington got no closer than the final margin of seven.
Jones and T.J. Odunlami (Columbia, Md./Atholton) netted 13 and 11 points, respectively for McDaniel.
Kevin Henry (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) added five points and five blocked shots for the Green Terror, who also held a 40-30 advantage on the glass.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Johns Hopkins on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
