Haverford gets defensive to down McDaniel, 46-42

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Brent Anderson netted nearly a one-third of Haverford’s points, tallying 15 in a 46-42 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Saturday.
Freshman Louis Sarris-Grau (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) reached double figures for the third time this season with 13 for the Green Terror (4-2, 1-1 CC), who was held to its fewest points in a game since a 63-39 loss to Clark on Dec. 29, 2004.
Sam Permutt recorded a double-double for the Fords (3-2, 1-1 CC) with 13 points and 15 rebounds.
Knotted at 42 on a Miguel Jones (Baltimore, Md./North County) jumper with 1:38 to play, Haverford notched the game’s final four points
Matthew Palmer hit a second-chance jumper on the Fords’ next possession before Permutt and Anderson each sank a free throw to hold on for the victory.
Haverford went just 2-for-6 from the line in the final minute but McDaniel missed three shots and a pair of free throws during the same span.
Behind baskets by three different Fords in the game’s first 5:58 allowed the hosts to open up a 6-0 advantage before the Green Terror, behind four points from Sarris-Grau, tallied seven of the game’s next eight to knot the game at 7-all six minutes later.
With his team trailing 13-11, Anderson converted a three-point play with 3:26 to play in the opening half and Permutt hit two from the charity stripe to give the hosts a 16-13 lead with 2:59 showing.
Anderson stretched the lead to four 1:20 later before a T.J. Odunlami (Columbia, Md./Atholton) basket-and-foul and Josh McKay (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) in the final 1:09 of the half gave the Green Terror an 18-17 lead at the intermission.
Knotted at 20 with 17:55 to play, Matthew Stitt hit a layup to spark a 12-5 run over the next 4 minutes, 40 seconds to open up a seven-point advantage – its largest of the game.
With his team trailing 34-27, Sarris-Grau connected on back-to-back possessions for McDaniel, helping the Green Terror on a 9-3 surge of its own to close the gap to within one. Ryan Finch (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon) capped the burst with five of his seven points on a 3-pointer and layup.
Stitt pushed the lead 42-38 with 3:43 to play before Finch and Jones evened the game for the final time
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Guilford on Dec. 17. Game time is 5 p.m.
