McDaniel finishes seventh at own invitational
HAMPSTEAD, Md. – Gerry Butler (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) shot a 74 on Monday to finish with a 153 and in 12 th place for the tournament, leading McDaniel to a seventh-place finish at its own invitational in men’s golf action on Sunday and Monday.
The Green Terror combined to shoot a 317 on Sunday and a 312 on Monday to finish the tournament with a combined score of 629. St. John Fisher, behind a 297 in round two, won the 11-team invitational with a score of 599.
SUNY Delhi’s Derek Walbridge earned medalist honors with his two-day total of 143 that included a one-under 70 on Sunday. By virtue of the scoring on the No. 1 handicap hole from Monday’s round, Walbridge took the crown over George Washington’s Max Hamm, who had the only other round under par with a 70 on Monday.
The McDaniel B-team finished ninth, carding a combined score of 649 behind a 21-stroke improvement in round two.
Zach LaVoie (Princeton, N.J./Pinedale) matched Butler’s round on Monday and finished with a 155 and in 16th place. Paul Kovalcheck (Fairless Hills, Pa./Truman) added a 157, posting a 78 on Sunday and a 79 on Monday.
Taylor Massie (Southington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) and Keith Mazurek, Jr. (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) tied for 42nd with matching scores of 166. Massie followed up a round one 79 with a round two 87 while Mazurek went from an 81 on Sunday to an 85 on Monday.
For the B-team, Steve Meier (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum School) led the way with a two-day score of 161 to finish in a tie for 29th place. Meier shot a 78 on Monday after carding an 83 on Sunday.
Alex Campbell (Howell, N.J./Wall) and Chris Merrill (Kingsville, Md./Fallston) each posted a score of 162, finishing in a tie for 33rd. Merrill showed the most improvement of any golfer in the tournament, firing a 75 on Monday to improve by 12 strokes. Campbell carded matching rounds of 81.
Matt Dennis (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) rounded out the competitors with a 164, posting rounds of 84 and 80, respectively, to finish 40th.
McDaniel returns to action in Myrtle Beach, S.C., in March.
