McDaniel finishes fifth at own invitational

 
 
 
ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. – Steve Meier (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum School) shot a two-round total of 157 to finish in a tie for eighth place overall and lead McDaniel to a fifth-place finish at its own spring invitational in men’s golf action on Saturday and Sunday at the The Bridges Golf Club.
            The Green Terror combined to card a 654, shooting matching scores of 327 each day. St. John Fisher won the team title with a score of 620, carding a 305 on Sunday after posting a tournament-leading 315 in windy and cold conditions on Saturday.
            Susquehanna finished in second place with a 635, beating out Wesley on team tiebreaking procedures. Franklin & Marshall was fourth with a team total of 641. The McDaniel B-squad posted a 673 to finish ninth overall, bouncing back with a 329 on Sunday after posting a 344 on Saturday.
            Matthew Dennis (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) led the second team with a score of 156, finishing in a tie for fourth place – seven strokes behind Susquehanna’s Pat Serfass, who shot an even-par 72 on Sunday to win the individual crown with a 149.
            Meier led the A-team with a 77 on Saturday before carding a second-round score of 80.
            Gerry Butler (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) and Paul Kovalcheck (Fairless Hills, Pa./Truman) finished in a tie for 23rd place overall, posting matching two-day totals of 163. Butler followed a first-round 84 with a second-round 79 while Kovalcheck shot an 81 on Saturday and an 82 on Sunday.
            Alex Campbell (Howell, N.J./Wall) finished with a score of 171, carding an 85 on Saturday and an 86 on Sunday.
            Zach LaVoie (Princeton, N.J./Pinedale) posted matching scores of 87 to finish with a score of 174.
            Rounding out the B-team, Taylor Massie (Southington, Conn./St. Paul’s Catholic) shot a 166, posting an 84 on Saturday and an 86 on Sunday.
            Keith Mazurek, Jr. (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) and Chris Merrill (Kingsville, Md./Fallston) posted scores of 175 (87-88) and 176 (94-82), respectively.
            McDaniel returns to action at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals at Hershey Country Club on Sunday and Monday. Tee time is 10 a.m. both days.
