McDaniel goes low to win Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational
MOOSIC, Pa. – Zach LaVoie (Princeton, N.J./Pinedale) combined to shoot a season-low 36-hole total of 146 to lead McDaniel to a first-place finish at the 2008 Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational in men’s golf action on Sunday and Monday.
After posting a combined score of 307 to lead by five strokes on Sunday, the Green Terror posted a season-low round of 292, outdistancing the field by no fewer than 16 strokes to win by 21 strokes with a 599. Susquehanna finished second with a two-day total of 620 (312-308) while conference-foe Franklin & Marshall and York (Pa.) each carded combined rounds of 624 to finish tied for third.
Playing in its final tune-up before this weekend’s three-day Centennial Conference (CC) championships at The Bridges Golf Club, LaVoie followed up his one over-par 72 with a round of 74 to finish second overall to pace McDaniel to its second tournament win of the spring.
Steve Meier (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum School) finished tied for third overall after carding a career-low round of 71 on Monday to go with his 77 on Sunday and finish with a 148 – one stroke lower than any two-round total posted by a Green Terror golfer entering the weekend.
Paul Kovalcheck (Fairless Hills, Pa./Truman) added rounds of 79 and 74, respectively, to finish with a two-day total of 153 to finish in a tie for seventh overall.
Gerry Butler (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) combined a second-round of 76 with his opening-round 79 to finish with a 155 to place 12th.
Taylor Massie (Southington, Conn./St. Paul Catholic) improved 13 strokes from Sunday to Monday, posting a 73 along side his 85 for a two-round total of 158 to place 16th.
McDaniel enters the weekend championship in search of its fifth CC title and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships at Chateau Elan Resort in Braselton, Ga., on May 13-16. In addition, the Green Terror has had six individual champions, including the last three. LaVoie won the 2007 crown with a three-day total of 227. The first round of the conference championship tees off on Friday at 12 p.m.
