McDaniel holds on to defeat Mary Washington, 11-9
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) scored three goals and added three assists to lead McDaniel to an 11-9 victory over Mary Washington in non-conference men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday.
The Green Terror (2-1) jumped out to an 8-2 lead with 5:37 remaining in the third quarter before the Eagles (3-2) scored the next four goals and seven of the game’s final 10 to close the deficit to two.
Sean Brown led Mary Washington, who had not allowed more than seven goals in any of its first three games, with four goals.
Mike Hatton (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) and Preston staked McDaniel to a 2-0 lead through one quarter with solo markers in the final 5:57 of the period.
Daniel Coats and Scott Fletcher responded with unassisted tallies of their own in the first 4:36 of the second to knot the game at 2-all before the Green Terror reeled off six straight to take control of the game.
Preston started the run, finishing a Bill Warner (Yardley, Pa./LaSalle) feed with 5:38 remaining in the second quarter.
Warner returned the favor 1 minute, 37 seconds later before Evan Young (Easton, Md./Broadneck) and Matt Buschman (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) made it a 6-2 game at the intermission.
Hatton and Dan Leader (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) pushed the lead to six before Dan Punaro started the Eagle rally.
Charlie White cut the deficit to 8-4 with an unassisted goal at the 1:01 mark of the third quarter.
Brown added a man-up goal 14 seconds into the fourth quarter and then made it two straight, finishing a Brent Fisk assist with 11:28 to play.
Warner and Young pushed the lead back to four.
Still leading 11-7 after a Preston goal, Brown tallied twice in the final 1:29 to set the final margin.
Ryan Motyka won 12 of 22 faceoffs and picked up a game-high 10 ground balls for Mary Washington.
The Green Terror returns to action at Widener on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
