Widener works overtime to down McDaniel, 9-8
CHESTER, Pa. – Luke Weber scored with 55 seconds remaining in the first overtime to lift Widener to a 9-8 victory over McDaniel in non-conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.
The Pride (2-3) built an 8-5 advantage early in the fourth quarter before the Green Terror (2-2) tallied the final three goals of regulation to force the extra session.
Six different players between the two teams scored two goals led by Widener’s Brian Stromko, who added three assists to go with his two markers.
After controlling play for the majority of the final three minutes of overtime, Weber finally found the back of the net, finishing a Clint Quedenfeld pass.
Behind goals from Bill Warner (Yardley, Pa./LaSalle), Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) and Chris Edmonds (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti), McDaniel built a 3-0 lead 4 minutes, 38 seconds into the game.
Cory Malampy finished a Stromko assisted with 2:14 remaining in the period to get the Pride on the board before a Matt Buschman (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) man-up tally off a Warner feed 56 seconds later.
Malampy and JJ Hoeffler tallied at each end of the second quarter to make it a 4-3 game at the intermission before Stromko knotted the game at 4-all 5:42 into the third quarter.
Preston re-established the one-goal edge for the Green Terror two and a half minutes later before two Quendenfeld goals keyed a 4-0 run that spanned the final four minutes of the third quarter and first four minutes of the fourth quarter.
Trailing 8-5 on Stromko’s man-up goal with 11:12 remaining in the fourth quarter, Even Young (Easton, Md./Broadneck) found the back of the net with 8:35 to play in regulation.
Warner finished a solo run with 5:44 showing before Buschmanknotted the game with an unassisted tally 52 seconds later.
Each team had its chances over the final four minutes of regulation, including two-man advantages by both teams, but neither team could find the back of the net. Chris Matthews just missed his second goal of the game, hitting the crossbar with 11 seconds on the clock.
In addition to tallying the game-winner, Weber had two assists, won 8 of 15 faceoffs and picked up two ground balls. Adam Ardary grabbed seven ground balls.
Widener finished with a 49-30 advantage in shots and a 33-18 edge in ground balls.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Lasell on Wednesday. Game time is 1 p.m.
