Fast start carries Washington to 16-9 win over McDaniel in CC opener

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Kolyn Kirby and Chris Read tallied five goals apiece to lead No. 6 Washington (Md.) to a 16-9 victory over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse opener for both teams on Saturday.
Jimmy Kielek added three goals and five assists to pace the Shoremen (7-0, 1-0 CC), who got seven points from Kirby and six points from Read.
Chris Edmonds (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) scored three times for the Green Terror (3-3, 0-1 CC), who trailed 11-1 after just 18 minutes, 17 seconds.
Read finished a pair of solo runs in the game’s first 1:58 to stake the hosts to an early 2-0 lead.
Doug Herdegen finished a Kirby feed 52 seconds later to make it 3-0 before two Kielek man-up tallies stretched the advantage to five before five minutes had elapsed.
Bill Warner (Yardley, Pa./LaSalle) found Evan Young (Easton, Md./Broadneck) with 8:29 showing in the first quarter to get McDaniel on the board.
Nick Gregory and Read made it a 7-1 game at the end of the first period before two more Read tallied keyed a five-goal flurry in the first 3:17 of the second quarter.
Edmonds and Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) found the back of the net 1 minute, 33 seconds apart to pull the Green Terror within 11-3 but Kielek made it a 12-3 game at the intermission, finishing a Casey O’Connor assist with 4:31 showing.
After back-to-back Kirby tallies made it 14-4 with 3:18 to play in the third quarter, Edmonds tallied just 1:05 later to spark a 3-0 McDaniel burst.
Matt Buschman (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) and Mike Hatton (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) trimmed the deficit to 14-7 before two minutes had gone by in the final period.
Young and Hatton answered Kirby’s final two goals, respectively, in the final 10 minutes to set the final margin.
Washington had a 41-27 advantage in the shot column and won 16 of 26 faceoffs.
Kenny McHugh (Westminster, Md./Calvert Hall) made 14 saves for the Green Terror while Gordon Cohen made eight stops at the other end.
