Swarthmore takes defensive games, downs McDaniel for first time since 1986

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Tyler Bradshaw scored two goals and picked up two groundballs to lead Swarthmore to a 4-3 win over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.
Jed Barnes (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) went 8-for-8 on faceoffs, pacing the Green Terror (4-6, 0-4 CC), who won all nine at the “X”.
Bradshaw converted a man-up goal 2:46 into the game for the Garnet (6-4, 1-4 CC), who had dropped the last 21 decisions with McDaniel.
After 22 minutes, 31 seconds without a goal, Swarthmore doubled its advantage before halftime when Anthony Phalen finished a solo run.
Evan Young (Easton, Md./Broadneck) converted a Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonough) to break up the shutout midway through the third quarter but the Garnet responded 2:30 later for their second man-up goal of the day.
Tim Sieger (Levittown, Pa./Comwell-Egan Catholic) found Matt Buschman (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) with 1:55 remaining in the period to pull the hosts within one.
Bradshaw and Young traded goals in the fourth quarter to set the final margin.
Frank Mazzucco recorded 16 saves for the Ganet while Kenny McHugh (Westminter, Md./Calvert Hall) made six at the other end.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Gettysburg on Wednesday. Game time is 4 p.m.
