Fast start leads No. 2 Gettysburg to 9-7 victory over McDaniel
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Joe Brody and Kyle McGrath combined for seven goals to lead second-ranked Gettysburg to a 9-7 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday.
McGrath notched three markers, including two in the first quarter, to key a start that gave the Bullets (10-1, 5-0 CC) a 5-0 lead 4:25 into the second quarter.
Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) tallied three times and added an assist for the Green Terror (4-7, 0-5 CC), who dropped its 13th consecutive decision to Gettysburg for its fourth straight loss and to remain winless in conference play.
Danny Collura finished a Drew Duckworth feed just 3:11 into the game before McGrath hit the first of his back-to-back unassisted tallies 1 minute, 2 seconds later. McGrath made it 3-0 lead with 30 seconds left in the first quarter.
A Brody man-up goal and Trip Dyer tally fewer than four minutes apart stretched the lead to five before Preston finished a solo run at the 8:18 mark of the second period to break up the shutout.
Brody stretched the lead to 6-1 before Corey Nellisen (Round Lake, N.Y./Bridgeton Academy) and Tim Sieger (Lettittown, Pa./Cornwell-Egan Catholic) pulled the hosts within 6-3 at the intermission.
McGrath finished his hat trick 3 minute, 33 seconds into the third quarter.
Mike Hatton (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) and Preston tallied nine seconds apart to make it a 7-5 game before back-to-back Brody tallies on either side of the quarter break reestablished the four-goal lead.
Hatton and Preston found the back of the net in the game’s final 6:16, including Preston with three ticks on the clock, to set the final margin.
The Green Terror returns to action at Muhlenberg on Saturday. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
