Dickinson works overtime to down McDaniel, 11-10
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Kevin Murray laced a one-timer with 8.8 seconds remaining in the first overtime to lead Dickinson to a 11-10 come-from-behind victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.
Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) and Matt Buschman (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) each recorded two goals and two assists to pace the Green Terror (5-10, 0-8 CC), who watched an 8-4 halftime advantage disappear to finish the conference slate without a victory.
Derek Still led the Red Devils (7-7, 2-6 CC) with four goals, including the go-ahead goal with 1:03 remaining in the fourth quarter.
After Still gave Dickinson its first lead of the game, Buschman intercepted a Red Devil attempted clear and found Preston in front of the cage with 10.7 seconds remaining to force the extra session.
With fewer than 20 seconds to play in the first overtime, Jon Schneider passed from the left side to a wide-open Murray at the top of the box. Murray laced the game-winner through the defense and into the back of the net for the victory.
Chris Edmonds (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) finished a solo run 52 seconds into the game to spark an early 3-0 run. Just 42 seconds later, Edmonds found Buschman from behind the cage to double the advantage before Mike Hatton (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) finished the Preston’s first feed to cap the run.
Casey Finkelstein and Still pulled the visitors within 3-2 before Buschman made it a 4-2 game with 37 seconds remaining in the first period.
Hatton, Corey Nellissen (Round Lake, N.Y./Bridgeton Academy) and Evan Young (Easton, Md./Broadneck) capped another 4-0 run with unassisted tallies to push the lead to 7-2 with 10:05 showing in the second quarter.
Still trailing 8-3, Dickinson reeled off the game’s next five to knot the game at 8-all with 8:03 to play in the third quarter.
Ted Sirvaitis keyed the run with back-to-back goals 41 seconds apart.
Edmonds gave the Green Terror a 10-9 lead heading to the fourth quarter but Sirvaitis completed his hat trick with 8:30 remaining in regulation to even the game once again.
