Big second half propels McDaniel to victory in opener
TOWSON, Md. – Bill Druckenmiller (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, to lead McDaniel to a 3-2 victory over Penn State-Berks in season-opening men’s soccer action on the first day of the Goucher College Soccer Classic on Saturday.
Mike Zopfi scored both goals for the Lions (0-1), single-handedly turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 halftime advantage.
Peter Gaitens (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) added a goal and an assist for the Green Terror (1-0), who outshot PSU-Berks 28-12 in the contest.
After Druckenmiller staked McDaniel to a 1-0 edge at the 12:59 mark, Zopfi found the back of the net in the 18th and 39th minutes to give his team a 2-1 lead.
Nearly four minutes into the second half, Gaitens finished a Donald Dokes (Sykesville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) feed to knot the game at 2.
At the 62:46 mark, Druckenmiller broke the deadlock off a Gaitens feed to give Jim Reigel his first win on the sideline in his first attempt.
Christian Maisel (Eldersburg, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) made four saves for the Green Terror while Matt Sterchak had 10 stops at the other end of the field.
McDaniel returns to action against Gallaudet in the second day of the Goucher Tournament on Sunday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
