Potucek propels McDaniel to overtime victory
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Joeseph Potucek (Germantown, Md./St. Johns at Prospect Hall) scored the game-winning goal 5:47 into the first overtime to lead McDaniel to a 2-1 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy in non-conference men’s soccer action on Saturday.
Timothy Wineke (Reisterstown, Md./North Carroll) scored his first collegiate goal for the Green Terror (3-1), who outshot the Griffins (2-2) by a decisive 24-11 margin.
Tim Munsey added the lone goal for Gwynedd-Mercy.
Despite a 10-3 advantage for McDaniel in shots, neither team could find the back of the net until Wineke poked home a Brandon Smith (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) rebound in the 66th minute.
With 9:25 remaining in regulation, Munsey responded, taking the ball then length of the field and shooting from the top of the box to tie the game at 1.
In the extra session, McDaniel carried play before Potucek dodged the keeper and headed the ball into the back of the net on the squad’s fourth shot of the period.
Christian Maisel (Eldersburg, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) recorded five saves for the Green Terror while the Griffins’ Joe Schneider had four.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Western Connecticut State on Sunday. Game time is 1 p.m.
