McDaniel battles Villa Julie to draw
WESTMINSTER, Md. – After 78 minutes of scoreless play, McDaniel and Villa Julie found the back of the net 4 minutes, 7 seconds apart to forge a 1-1 draw in non-conference men’s soccer action on Monday.
Bill Druckenmiller (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) scored his fourth goal in the last three games for the Green Terror (7-2-3) while Tyler King tallied for the Mustangs (4-6-1), who were outshot 19-5 in the game.
After a first half carried mostly by McDaniel, who held an 11-1 advantage in shots during the period, the two teams exchanged momentum over the first 30-plus minutes of the second stanza.
At the 78:26 mark, James Cosby (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) one-touched a quick pass left through the defense to Donzell Tate (Silver Spring, Md./St. Johns Catholic), who found a cutting Druckenmiller with the Villa Julie keeper out. Druckenmiller used the wide-open net to give the Green Terror a 1-0 lead.
Just over four minutes later, Vinny Caltabiano played a centering pass off a McDaniel defender and right to King, who blasted a shot from the top of the box into the lower-left corner of the net to knot the game at 1.
Neither team mounted much of an attack in overtime with Villa Julie taking one shot in the first extra session and the Green Terror attempting two shots in the second 10-minute period.
McDaniel had 10 corner kicks to the Mustangs’ two in a physical game that saw 49 fouls called and four yellow cards issued.
Christian Maisel (Eldersburg, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) had one save for the Green Terror while Adam Wiatrowski made seven stops for Villa Julie.
McDaniel returns to action at No. 16 Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.
