Nesterak scores in overtime to give Swarthmore win over McDaniel
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Evan Nesterak scored both Swarthmore goals, including the game-winner with five seconds remaining in the first overtime to lead his team in a 2-1 win over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s soccer action on Saturday.
The Green Terror (7-5-4, 1-4-2 CC) took a 1-0 lead into halftime but the Garnet (10-2-3, 4-2-1 CC) countered with a second half goal before getting the overtime victory.
Nesterak finished a Michael Bonesteel pass into the lower-right corner of the goal to keep Swarthmore in contention for a postseason berth and virtually eliminate McDaniel from the CC playoff chase.
In the middle of a scuffle in front of the goal, Peter Gaitens (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) found Donzell Tate (Silver Spring, Md./St. Johns Catholic) who put the ball into the back of the net at the 17:37 mark.
In the 65th minute, Jeff Kushner took one of just four Garnet corner kicks and found Nesterak to knot the game at 1 and force the extra session.
Christian Maisel (Eldersburg, MD/Boys Latin) recorded eight saves for McDaniel, while Swarthmore’s Ryan Sutcliffe had four.
The Garnet outshot the Green Terror 19-6 on the day.
McDaniel returns to action at Dickinson on Wednesday. Game time is 5 p.m.
