McDaniel drops pair at Randolph-Macon to open season
ASHLAND, Va. – Carrie Barchick recorded three hits and three RBIs to lead Randolph-Macon to a doubleheader sweep over McDaniel in non-conference softball action on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets (5-3) held the Green Terror (0-2) to just two runs and nine hits in 3-1 and 12-1 victories.
In the opener, Randolph-Macon plated an unearned run in the third inning before McDaniel responded with its own unearned tally in the fifth.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Brooke Snyder singled home Morgan Greene before scoring on a Meaghan Mauck double one batter later for the final margin.
Christi Wise and Courtney Brooks combined for 13 strikeouts. Brooks recorded seven of those Ks to get her first win of the year.
After spotting the Green Terror a 1-0 lead when Emily Trainor (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) doubled home Lauren Toomey (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) in the top of the first, a Paige Smith three-run home run turned the one-run deficit into a two-run lead.
A Barchick RBI single and Smith-run double in the second stretched the lead to 8-1 before tallying twice in each of the third and fourth frames for the 12-1 final in five innings.
Katie Raulerson fanned eight, going to the distance for the win.
The Green Terror returns to action at Bridgewater on Saturday. Game one of the doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
