Washington sweeps McDaniel in conference opener
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Meghan Russell recorded four hits to lead Washington (Md.) to a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Saturday. The Shorewomen (7-7, 2-0 CC) plated three unearned runs in the first inning in a 3-0 game-one victory before completing the sweep with an 8-2 win in the nightcap of the first conference action for both teams.
Karyn Curley (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) notched two of the three hits for the Green Terror (5-9, 0-2 CC) in the opener while Kate Phelan (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) and Kristina Skinner (Westminster, Md./Westminster) each rapped out two hits in game two.
In game one, Jes Van Gosen reached on an error to lead off the home first before stealing second and advancing to third on a fly out.
A Meghan Luterzo double plated Van Gosen before scoring on an Amanda Campbell two-out single. Emily Adams drove in Campbell for all of the scoring.
Adams scattered three hits for the win while Christina Morley (North Wales, Pa./Archbishop Wood) allowed just five hits after the first inning to keep Washington off the board.
After a two-out error in the third inning of game two gave McDaniel a 2-1 lead, a Meg Travers two-run double and Kim Proctor RBI single in the home half of the frame gave the hosts a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, four straight Shorewomen runners reached base with the bases loaded to set the final margin.
Luterzo started the stretch with a walk before back-to-back singles from Russell and Proctor pushed the lead to 7-2. Campbell capped the stretch with a second bases-loaded walk.
The Green Terror returns to action at Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 3:30 p.m.
