Franklin & Marshall records pair of walk-off wins to down McDaniel
LANCASTER, Pa. – Robyn Jones recorded four hits and six RBIs, including the game-winning double in the opener, to lead Franklin & Marshall to a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Tuesday.
The Diplomats (3-11, 2-2 CC) scored in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one to take a 4-3 win before a bunt in the eighth inning handed the Green Terror (5-11, 0-4 CC) its fourth and fifth straight losses by a 6-5 margin.
Diana Rosemier (Damascus, Md./Damascus) paced McDaniel with four hits and two runs scored.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning of a tie game in the opener, Kathleen Clinchy doubled to the gap in left-center before scoring on a Jones double down the left-field line to give Franklin & Marshall its first conference win.
The nightcap needed an eighth inning before the Diplomats rallied for a similar result.
Meredith Morgan led off the frame with a double before a Karalynne Clark sacrifice bunt put the winning run 60 feet away with two outs to work with.
Pinch-hitter Jessica Feldman got her bunt attempt down, allowing Clark to score and give the hosts a sweep.
A Jones two-run single in the second inning staked Franklin & Marshall to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of game two before a Lauren Toomey (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) two-run triple and wild pitch pulled McDaniel within 4-3 in the top of the third.
The two teams exchanged runs in the fourth before a Karyn Curley (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) double and Megan Elfert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) RBI single evened the game at 5-all in the sixth inning.
In the opener, McDaniel grabbed an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in its first at bat.
A Morgan single and Jones RBI double pulled the hosts even in the bottom of the third.
The Green Terror responded in the top of the fourth. With one out, Brittany King (Baltimore, Md./Mt. Carmel) singled up the middle before Kate Phelan (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) doubled to put runners at second and third.
With two outs, Elfert cleared the bases for a 3-1 lead.
The Diplomats took advantage of an error in the sixth inning to plate two runs and knot the game, setting up the first of the final inning heroics.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Haverford on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
