McDaniel splits doubleheader with Haverford; Green Terror snap nine-game skid in opener
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Brittany King (Baltimore, Md./Mt. Carmel) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored in the opener to lift McDaniel to a 7-4 victory over Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Thursday.
The Fords (12-8, 5-1 CC) bounced back to take a 5-2 victory in game two.
With the victory in game one, the Green Terror (6-16, 1-5 CC) snapped a program-record nine game skid, notching its first win since a 5-0 win over Macalester on Mar. 21.
Tied at 3-all in the opener, Emily Trainor (Mancaster, Md./North Carroll) and King put together back-to-back singles to lead off the home fifth. After a wild pitch, Lauren Toomey (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) drew a walk to load the bases.
Back-to-back RBI groundouts from Lauren Wildasin (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) and Kate Phelan (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) broke the deadlock.
A two-run double from King in the sixth stretched the lead to 7-3 before Haverford got an RBI single from Cassandra Searls in the seventh to set the final margin.
Diana Rosemier (Damascus, Md./Damascus) led off the bottom of the first, reaching on a error. After stealing second, she scored a King single up the middle to stake McDaniel to a 1-0 lead.
A two-out walk to Megan Elfert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) and Rosemier single put runners at first and second for Karyn Curley (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg), who rope a double to the wall in left field to stretch the lead to 3-0.
A Natalie Richman three-run home run in the fourth inning knotted the game at 3-all.
In game two, Candice Smith was hit by the first pitch of the third inning before scoring on a Lindsey Sullivan single with one out. One batter later, Searls cleared the 205 sign in left-center for a two-run shot, stretching the lead to 3-0.
A leadoff walk to Samantha Fontinell and one-out Smith single just inside the left-field line put runners at first and third. Smith stole second before Sullivan dumped a ball into center field to clear the bases and stretch the lead to 5-0.
A Phelan RBI single plated Curley in the bottom of the frame before the Green Terror got a pair of tallies in the bottom of the seventh to set the final margin.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Swarthmore on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
