Messiah breaks out early to sweep McDaniel
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Amy Bowie recoreded three hits, three RBIs and a run scored to lead Messiah to a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in non-conference softball action on Wednesday.
The Falcons (15-11) held on for an 8-7 game-one victory after the Green Terror (5-15) tallied five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning before completing the sweep with a 5-2 victory.
Diana Rosemier (Damascus, Md./Damascus) notched four hits to lead McDaniel, who saw its losing streak extend to nine games in its first home game of the season – and first in a stretch of four doubleheaders in five days.
A Bowie RBI double and Lindsay Hall two-run single staked the Falcons to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one.
Rosemier led off the bottom of the frame with a single before stealing second and scoring on an Emily Trainor (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) single.
A Rebekkah Funk bunt single and Rebecca Stackhouse RBI double in the top of the second pushed the lead back to three.
Four errors, including a pair of dropped foul balls, led to two unearned runs in the top of the third on an Abby Bergakker home run to straightaway center field.
An infield single and walk coupled with a Bowie two-run single stretched the lead to 8-1 in the top of the fourth.
Back-to-back doubles by Megan Elfert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) and Lauren Toomey (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) in the fifth trimmed the deficit to 8-2.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Elfert roped a double to deep center and Toomey drew a walk. Rosemier’s seeing-eye single through the left side loaded the bases for Karyn Curley (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg), who dropped a single into left to drive in Elfert.
After a pitching change, Jenna Batchelor struck out the first batter she faced before Brittany King (Baltimore, Md./Mt. Carmel) made it a one-run game with a grand slam over the left-field fence.
Batchelor induced a roller to first base to protect the win for Corinn Eby and pick up her second save.
In the nightcap, all of the scoring took place in the first three innings.
A bunt single, throwing error, three wild pitches coupled with a Lana Trotter double staked Messiah to another 3-0 advantage.
Consecutive doubles from Toomey and Lauren Wildasin (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) along with a Kate Phelan (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) RBI single trimmed the deficit to 3-2.
A Nicole Adams long ball in the third after a leadoff walk by Trotter stretched the lead back to three and set the final margin.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Haverford on Thursday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
