Dickinson sweeps twinbill from McDaniel
CARLISLE, Pa. – Emma Murtaugh rapped out five hits and drove in five runs to lead Dickinson to a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Tuesday.
The Red Devils (20-12, 8-4 CC) took the first game 8-0 in five innings before grabbing a 7-4 win in the nightcap to sweep the Green Terror (8-20, 3-9 CC) for the first time since 1987.
Diana Rosemier (Damascus, Md./Damascus) finished with two hits in each game and a pair of stolen bases in the nightcap to pace McDaniel.
In the opener, Rachel Fleming drew a leadoff walk before scoring on a Kaitlyn McDonald single.
After a Murtaugh double put runners at second and third, Theresa Souza cleared the bases with a double of her own.
A Murtaugh RBI single in the third stretched the lead to 4-0 before a second Murtaugh double and back-to-back singles from Lisa Biddle and Alesha Sisco in the fifth ended the game early with two outs.
In the second game, Fleming and Murtaugh each recorded singles in the first two innings to stake Dickinson to a 5-0 lead.
In the first it was four straight singles from McDonald, Murtaugh, Souza and Biddle to chase starter Lauren Shue (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) after six batters, trailing 3-0.
A pair of errors led to two unearned in the second innings.
A Kristina Skinner (Westminster, Md./Westminster) triple and Rosemier RBI single in the third broke up the shutout before Rosemier stole second and third and scored on a Karyn Curley (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) sacrifice fly to pull within 5-2.
Fleming’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the inning pushed the lead to 7-2.
The Green Terror set the final margin with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
McDaniel returns to action at Muhlenberg on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
