McDaniel splits twinbill with Columbia Union
TAKOMA PARK, Md. – Katie Ferguson (Dover, Pa./Northern) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored in the nightcap to help McDaniel earn a split with Columbia Union in non-conference softball action on Thursday.
After falling 10-0 to the Pioneers (9-21) in the first game, the Green Terror (11-21) bounced back from the five-inning defeat to take game two, 6-4.
Trailing 4-2 with one out in the sixth inning, Amanda Farr (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) reached second on a single and error.
After Ferguson reached on an infield single, Lauren Toomey (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) dumped a single into center field to plate Farr and trim the deficit to one.
A Diana Rosemier (Damascus, Md./Damascus) single down the line loaded the bases a wild pitch plated Ferguson to knot the game with two outs.
Karyn Curley (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) capped the four-run frame with a two-run double to center.
A Christina Smith home run to lead off the second inning staked Columbia Union to a 1-0 lead.
A Ferguson two-run double in the top of the fourth gave McDaniel a brief 2-1 lead but a Smith two-bagger and double steal knotted the game before a Cherrae Freeman RBI double gave the hosts a one-run lead again.
Singles from Heidi Lohr and Stephanie Chapman in the bottom of the fifth stretched the Pioneers’ lead to two.
A Betty Luedtke two-run double and Freeman RBI single capped a four-run first inning in the opener.
After stretching the lead to 5-0 in the second inning, Columbia Union used six singles in the fourth inning to plate five more runs and get the 10-0 win.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Gettysburg on Sunday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
