Salisbury sweeps McDaniel in season finale
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Kelly Waskewicz rapped out five hits to go with five RBIs and three runs scored for Salisbury in a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in non-conference softball action on Wednesday.
Keyed by a 4-for-4 performance from Alex Winstead, the Sea Gulls (32-7) completed the sweep with a 14-7 victory in the nightcap after winning game one 8-0 in six innings.
Diana Rosemier (Damascus, Md./Damascus) led the Green Terror (13-23) with four hits in her final two games, including stealing the 101st base of her career to set a new Centennial Conference record for swipes in a career.
Scoreless in the top of the third of game one, Jen Cahall led off with a single before scoring on a Kurisha Hoffman one-out double. One batter later, Waskewicz made it a 3-0 game, cranking a home run off the left-field scoreboard.
A fielding error and Waskewicz RBI single stretched the lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth before a pair of sixth-inning miscues doubled the lead.
Two errors on the first three balls in play put runners at first and second before Stacy Davis was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Hoffman followed with a single before Waskewicz’s sacrifice fly made it 6-0.
An Ashley Stern single loaded the bases once again for Lauren Brenneman, who laced a single into left field, plating Davis and Hoffman.
Davis also picked up the shutout win, scattering five hits and striking out two.
In game two, Salisbury took advantage of a two-out error to plate four unearned runs and overcome a 6-1 deficit to knot the game.
A leadoff walk to Hoffman and back-to-back singles from Winstead and Brenneman put runners at the first and second with the visitors trailing, 6-2.
After a fly out to the gap, a dropped popup scored one more run and prolonged the frame.
Ali Ritter followed with a two-run single and Cahill and Meaghan O’Gara eached dropped in singles to knot the game.
In the fourth inning it was a a Brenneman RBI double and Ritter two-run single that accounted for three runs to give the Sea Gulls the lead for good, 9-6.
Leading 10-6, an error, Winstead two-run single to the gap and Amanda DeMoine pinch-hit RBI single stretched the lead to 14-6 before a Lauren Toomey (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) double and Megan Elfert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) RBI single set the final margin.
A Waskewicz walk to lead off the game coupled with a Winstead sacrifice and Benneman single staked Salisbury to an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Green Terror used three walk and a hit batter around a pair of long balls to take a 6-1 lead.
Toomey drew a walk to lead off the frame before Kate Phelan (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) pulled a ball just inside the left-field fair pole to give McDaniel a 2-1 lead.
Lauren Wildasin (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) drew a walk one batter later before an Elfert single put runners at first and second. Kristina Skinner (Westminster, Md./Westminster) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
After a fielder’s choice, Emily Trainor (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) fouled a 1-0 pitch off her foot and had to be lifted for pinch-hitter Katie Ferguson (Dover, Pa./Northern). Four pitches later, the freshman belted a pitch over the fence in left-center for her first career home run and the 6-1 lead.
