McDaniel men sixth, women seventh at CC Championships; Green Terror best four program records

LANCASTER, Pa. – In his final collegiate event, Chris Reed (Bowie, Md./Bowie) etched his name in the McDaniel record book as a part of four program records, leading the Green Terror to a sixth-place showing at the 2008 Centennial Conference (CC) Championships at Franklin & Marshall in men’s swimming action on Friday through Sunday.
The Green Terror men tallied 277 points to finish sixth. Franklin & Marshall brought home the team title with 866 points. The McDaniel women came home seventh with 176 points. Gettysburg won its CC-best 10th championship with a championship-record 913 points, bettering its previous best point total of 853 during the 1996 championships.
Reed picked up a pair of medals to go with his quartet of records. Stephen Gomez (Charlottesville, Va./Albermmarle) also brought home a bronze medal
Reed nabbed a silver medal and program record in the 100 breaststroke on Saturday with a time of 58.83 seconds. Swimming the event as exhibition, he also set a new program-best mark in the 100 butterfly on Saturday, finishing in a time of 53.52.
Reed was also part of two relay teams that set new records. Teaming with Gomez, Scott Cammarata (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and Wes Henry (Greencastle, Pa./Perkiomen), the quartet combined to post a time of 3:40.42 in the 400 medley relay and finish sixth to close Friday’s session.
Gomez, Reed, Henry and Morgan DeHart (Salisbury, Md./Wiciomico) closed Saturday’s sessions with a sixth-place finish in the 800 free relay, posting a program-best time of 7:20.80.
Reed brought home his second medal of the weekend with a bronze in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:07.12. Gomez grabbed third place in the 400 IM in a time of 4:19.91 for the Green Terror’s only other medal of the weekend.
Reed added a fifth-place showing in the 200 IM (2:00.30) while Gomez posted a fifth-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:01.20) and seventh-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:53.33).
Cammarata touched sixth in the 400 IM (4:28.09) and eighth in the 200 butterfly (2:09.87) while DeHart was seventh in the 400 IM (4:28.38).
On the women’s side, Whitney Schieren (Yardley, Pa./Pennington) led McDaniel with three individual top-12 finishes. The freshman posted her best finish of the weekend in Saturday’s 100 butterfly, touching eighth with a time of 1:01.38. On Sunday, she was ninth in the 200 butterfly (2:16.76) and was 11th in Friday’s 200 IM (2:19.42).
Amanda Burke (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) and Kacy Cribbs (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) also earned points for the Green Terror. Burke was 14th in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.94) and 16th in the 100 butterfly (1:04.93) while Cribbs was 16th in both the 100 (1:16.59) and 200 (2:46.39) breaststroke events.
