Swarthmore sweeps McDaniel in CC opener

 
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Swarthmore won 15 of 21 events in a sweep of McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) men’s and women’s swimming opener on Saturday.
            The Garnet men (1-1, 1-0 CC) defeated the Green Terror men (0-1, 0-1 CC) 56-30, winning eight of the 10 events scored. On the women’s side, Swarthmore (2-0, 1-0 CC) downed McDaniel (0-1, 0-1 CC) by a 58-33 margin, taking first in seven of 11 events.
            On the men’s side, Douglas Gilchrist-Scott and Michael Ahn swam each end of the 200-yard medley relay as part of a two-win day. Teaming with Kyle Skolfield and Sterling Satterfield, the quartet finished with a time of 1:43.39 to stake the Garnet to a 7-0 lead that would never be challenged.
            Gilchrist-Scott added a first-place finish in the 100 free (50.08) while Ahn’s second victory was in the 50 free (22.77).
            Stephen Shymon was also a double winner for Swarthmore, touching first in the 200 free (1:52.66) and 500 free (5:01.45) – a victory that wrapped up the meet win with two events remaining.
            On the women’s side, both teams had a pair of double winners.
            Whitney Scheiren (Yardley, Pa./Pennington) and Kacey Cribbs (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) swam the first two legs of the 200 medley relay that took first in the opening event with a time of 2:04.19.
            Knotted at 8-all after Allison Bishop took the first of her two wins in the 1,000 free (11:23.70), Julie Wrobel notched the first of her two victories in the 200 free (2:04.97) to give the Garnet the lead for good, 16-9.
            Bishop added a second win in the other distance event, winning the 500 free with a time of 5:40.02 to secure the meet victory.
            Wrobel won the 100 free with a time of 57.90.
            Scheiren’s other victory came in the 200 IM, touching first with a time of 2:22.45. Cribbs was credited with the win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:17.66.
            McDaniel returns to action at home against Gettysburg on Wednesday. Meet time is 7 p.m.
