McDaniel men and women grab first wins over Ursinus
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Whitney Scheiren (Yardley, Pa./Pennington) anchored the 400 free relay to her third win of the day, lifting the McDaniel women to a 49-46 victory over Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) swimming action on Saturday.
The Green Terror (1-2, 1-2 CC) men, who won eight of 11 events, also defeated the Bears (0-2, 0-1 CC) for its first win of the season, 64-31.
The McDaniel won (1-2, 1-2 CC) won six events while the Bears (1-1, 0-1 CC) took first in the other five events.
Scheiren teamed with Gaby Cifuentes (Princeton, N.J./Princeton), Amanda Burke (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) and Katie Dorian (Newtown Square, Pa./Notre Dame Academy) to win the final event by 0.69 seconds to turn a 46-42 deficit into the first win of the season.
Scheiren also won the 200 IM with a time of 2:22.91 and the 100 free with a time of 58.91.
With the meet-clinching win, Cifuentes also turned in a three-win day, touching first in the 200 free (2:06.73) and 500 free (5:41.63). Burke made it two victories for the day, having previously won the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.89.
Stephen Gomz (Charlottesville, Va./Albermmarle), Chris Reed (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Wes Henry (Greencastle, Pa./Perkiomen) were all triple winners for the Green Terror.
Gomez touched first in the distance events, winning the 500 free (5:08.81) and 1000 free (10:29.52).
Reed took individual wins in the 200 IM (2:06.66) and 200 backstroke (2:08.28) while Henry was victorious in the 50 free (23.24) and 100 free (51.07).
The trio teamed with Morgan DeHart (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) to wrap up the meet with a win in the 400 free relay (3:27.60).
Scott Cammarata (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and Chris Bosco (Vienna, Va./James Madison) rounded out the McDaniel winners with victories in the 200 butterfly (2:16.56) and 200 breaststroke (2:28.24), respectively.
McDaniel returns to action at Marymount on Saturday. Meet time is 2 p.m.
