McDaniel splits at own invitational, finishes second
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Kristen Nuckles (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) tallied 105 assists, 39 digs, 11 kills, 11 total blocks and three aces in four matches to lead McDaniel to a 2-2 weekend and second-place finish at the 26th Annual Green Terror Invitational in non-conference volleyball action on Friday and Saturday.
The Green Terror (13-6) opened pool play on Friday, falling to St. Mary’s (Minn.) 3-1 (30-27, 30-19, 27-30, 30-21) before bouncing back to sweep Marymount, 30-13, 30-16, 30-24.
On Saturday, McDaniel came back from a 2-0 deficit to down Salisbury and reach the championship match. The Sea Gulls won the first two games 30-18 and 30-28, respectively, before the Green Terror took a 30-20 decision in game three and a 30-25 win in game four to force the deciding game, which McDaniel took, 15-9.
In the championship match, the Cardinals made it a perfect 4-0 trip east with a 30-20, 30-27, 30-24 win over the hosts.
On Friday, Taylor Herrgott (Derwood, Md./Magruder) led the way in the loss against St. Mary’s, recording 12 kills, two aces and five total blocks while Alice Hardwick (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) steadied the defense with 24 digs.
In the nightcap, Herrgott added an identical line while Nuckles added a team-high 12 digs to go with her 27 assists.
In the final match of pool play, Herrgott put down 20 kills and added five blocks. Hardwick led the defense with 22 digs while Deanne Lehr (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs) was among a trio of McDaniel players with 18 digs. Nuckles added 16 digs and 40 assists to go with six block assists.
In the championship match, the Green Terror did not have a player reach double figures in kills. Katie Seibel (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) led the squad with nine.
Nuckles and Herrgott, who totaled 49 kills and 21 total blocks in the four matches, earned spots on the all-tournament team.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Gettysburg on Wednesday. Match time is 7 p.m.
