McDaniel advances to first CC championship
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Katie Seibel (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) recorded 20 kills to lead McDaniel to a 3-2 win over Johns Hopkins in the 2007 Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball tournament semifinals at Haverford on Saturday.
The third-seeded Green Terror (16-8) advanced to its first CC championship match in 10 tournaments, improving to 5-0 in five-game matches this season.
Natalia Fijalkowski’s led the Blue Jays (23-5) with 20 kills and 19 digs, one of three double-doubles by the No. 2 seed.
McDaniel took the first two games by matching 30-28 scores before Johns Hopkins forced the deciding game with 30-19 and 30-16 wins, respectively.
After back-and-forth play throughout the first half of game five, two Blue Jays error helped key a 4-0 run that gave the Green Terror an 11-7 lead.
Johns Hopkins countered a 4-0 run of its own to pull even at 11 before McDaniel tallied four of the game’s final points for a 15-12 victory – its first over the Blue Jays since 2001.
Taylor Herrgott (Derwood, Md./Magruder) added 12 kills and four blocks for the Green Terror while Sarah Hanlon (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) had 10 and two blocks.
Alice Hardwick (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) led four players in double figures in digs with 23 digs. Kristen Nuckles (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) added 18 digs to go with her 42 assists and three blocks.
Kim Jackanich and Allison Cappelaere added double-doubles performances for the Blue Jays. Jackanich recorded matching numbers in the kills and digs column with 17 each. Cappelaere posted 13 kills and 18 digs. Katie Buckheit led the defense with a match-high 29 digs. Johns Hopkins had 11 services aces, including four from Cappelaere.
The Green Terror will take on top-seed Haverford, who defeated Gettysburg in the day’s other semifinal 3-1, in the championship match on Sunday. Match time is 1 p.m.
