Haverford sweeps McDaniel to earn second straight title
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Rebecca Salvo recorded a match-high 19 kills and finished off one of three Haverford double-doubles with 12 digs to lead her squad to a 3-0 win over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball championship match on Sunday. The 15th-ranked Fords (29-2) won their second consecutive CC title and earned the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. The tournament field will be announced late Sunday night. The Green Terror (16-9) conclude its season, falling in its first-ever CC championship match appearance, 30-19, 30-18, 30-24.
Sara Hanlon (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) led McDaniel with 11 kills while Caroline Rushe (Dover, Del./Dover) steadied the defense with 11 digs. Alice Hardwick (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) and Deanne Lehr (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs) added 10 apiece.
Rachel Salvo added 12 kills and a match-high 23 digs for Haverford while Laura Nuyen also contributed a double-double performance with 11 kills and 17 digs. Kelsey Cantwell and Emily Hinchcliff also reached double figures in the dig column with 17 and 16, respectively. Hinchcliff also added 49 assists.
The Fords jumped out to an 8-3 lead in game one that included the first of four Cantwell aces.
In game two, two Nuyen kills sparked an early 4-0 burst.
Three straight Haverford attacking errors in game three allowed the Green Terror to open a 10-7 advantage but back-to-back Rebecca Salvo kills capped a 5-1 burst that put the Fords in front, 12-11.
Leading 22-19, McDaniel committed three straight errors to knot the game at 22 and the Fords used the momentum to take eight of the last 10 points and complete the sweep.
