Widener cruises to win over McDaniel in first outing of 2009

CHESTER, Pa. – Becky Tyler recorded a game-high 20 points to lead Widener to a 74-54 victory over McDaniel in non-conference women’s basketball action on Saturday.
Ali Moreland (Davidsonville, Md./South River) and Whitney Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) netted 11 points apiece to lead the Green Terror (4-4), who were held to a season low for points in its first action of 2009 after a three-week layoff.
Barbara Fleming and Casey Pritz also reached double figures for the Pride (8-4) with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Finding itself in a 4-0 hole after starting 0-for-5 from the floor, Ashley Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) converted the first of two free throws at the 17:10 mark to get McDaniel on the scoreboard.
A Snoopslayup off an Morelandassist 43 seconds later pulled the visitors within 4-3 but a Casey Pritz layup on the other end stretched the lead back to three with 16:19 on the first-half clock.
A Lindsey Isler layup off a Barbara Fleming steal-and-dish pushed the lead to 8-3, keying a 17-5 stretch over the next 8 minutes, 13 seconds that was capped by 11 straight Widener points.
Meredith Larsen (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) halted the Green Terror’s nearly 5-minute, 15-second dry spell with a rebound-and-basket to pull the visitors within 23-10 with 7:35 to play in the opening stanza.
The Pride responded with a 6-0 burst in a 25-second span to stretch the lead to 29-10 and finished tallying 18 of the half’s final 24 points.
McDaniel finished the first half, shooting just 5 of 26 from the floor. The five field goals and 16 points were season lows for the Green Terror in any half this season. McDaniel also committed 15 turnovers over the stanza – one shy of its season average for a game.
The Green Terror tallied finished with 23 turnovers – four more than its previous season high of 19 after just eight second-half miscues.
Widener stretched the lead to as many as 41 with 9:12 to play in the second half before McDaniel closed the game on a 28-8 run to avoid its first loss of more than 20 points in nearly six years.
Catherine Mills (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) finished with 10 points. Moreland dished out five assists and nabbed three steals.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against No. 22 Muhlenberg on Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
