McDaniel falls to Gettysburg in regular-season finale, earns fourth seed in CC tournament
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Courtney Fields recorded 20 points and eight rebounds to lead Gettysburg to a 65-54 win over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s basketball action on Saturday. Despite the loss in its regular-season finale, the Green Terror (14-11, 11-7 CC) had everything else go its way on the day. Washington (Md.) defeated Johns Hopkins and Dickinson downed Franklin & Marshall to force a five-way tie for second place in the conference standings at 11-7. By virtue of head-to-head tiebreaker, McDaniel earned the fourth seed in next week’s tournament and will host Dickinson in the first-round game on Wednesday. Game time will be determined on Monday.
Ali Moreland (Davidsonville, Md./South River) and Ashley Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) paced the Green Terror with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Mary Spicer tallied 13 points for the Bullets (14-11, 11-7 CC), who finished as the odd team out in the tiebreaker and miss the CC tournament for the first time since 2004.
In a game which featured 15 ties and 11 lead changes, there was only one lead of greater than four points until Gettysburg closed the game on an 11-2 run, stretching a 54-52 edge with 4:30 to play to the final margin.
Fields sparked the rally with a jumper and 3-pointer, contributing nine points during the game-clinching stretch.
Knotted at 9-all with 13:48 to play in the opening half on a pair of Lyles free throws, Fields hit a layup to help the Bullets put together a 7-0 burst to open up the game’s largest advantage with 10:41 to play in the stanza.
A Kim Staub (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) 3-pointer and single Moreland free throw capped a 10-2 stretch that gave McDaniel a slim 19-18 advantage.
Caroline Funchion hit the second of two from the charity stripe with 25 seconds remaining in the first half to stretch the Gettysburg lead to four before Moreland hit a jumper in the waning seconds of the half to close the deficit to 29-27 at the intermission.
Neither team led by more than a basket until a Sara Kinsley layup and Spicer free throw gave the hosts a 50-47 advantage with 6:37 to play.
Two Lyles free throws closed the deficit to 50-49 with 5:55 showing but the Green Terror would get no closer.
Moreland added three assists and two steals while Staub had eight points and three helpers.
