Villa Julie works overtime to down McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Lauren Zegowitz scored her sixth and final goal with 1:09 remaining in the first overtime to break a 12-all deadlock and lead Villa Julie to a 13-12 victory over McDaniel in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Thursday.
Brittany Baer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) paced the Green Terror (6-4) with four goals while Jennifer Stone (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) tallied three markers.
Cat Connelly added a hat trick of her own for the Mustangs (6-4), who trailed for just 1:51 in the 66 minutes of action.
With 2:42 to play in regulation, Stone pulled McDaniel within 11-10.
Mandi Carr won the ensuing draw control and Villa Julie called a timeout with 2:32 on the clock. The Mustangs attempted to possess the ball but an errant pass in their defensive end gave the Green Terror possession with two minutes to play.
Sarah Mintz (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) worked the ball from behind the cage around the left side where she found a cutting Kerrie Wuenschel (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) in the middle of the field. Wuenschel fired a laser from just outside the eight-meter arc that found the back of the net and knotted the game with 1:36 on the clock.
Both teams had a shot in the final minute to win the game in regulation, including a Chelsea Ferruzzi (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) free-position shot with 12.5 seconds that went wide.
Lisa Baker needed just 41 seconds of the extra session to give Villa Julie the advantage again.
After the teams switched ends, Shaena Smith (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) won the opening draw and took it straight to the cage. A pair of fouls gave Smith a free-position attempt that she converted 15 seconds into the second half of the first overtime.
At the 64:51 mark, Kauffman converted the Mustang’s lone free-position goal of the game to put her team on top.
A turnover near midfield nearly cost Villa Julie again when Smith scooped up the loose ball and raced for the cage. A foul with 0.4 seconds on the clock gave Smith the ball from the 12-meter arc but she was unable to get a clean shot for the tie.
Connelly staked the Mustangs to a 1-0 lead 2:18 into the game before an Erinn Hopkins (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) unassisted tally knotted the game at the 6:18 mark.
Ferruzzi finished a Wuenschel feed with 11:50 elapsed to give McDaniel its only lead before Zegowitz sparked a five-goal bust that knotted the game and gave the visitors a 6-2 lead nearly 10 minutes later.
Trailing 8-5 at the intermission on a Stone tally 4.8 seconds before the break, Kelly Scheler (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) finished a solo run before Baer tallied back-to-back markers to pull the Green Terror knot the game at the 42:44 mark.
Connelly gave her team a one-goal advantage before Baer knotted the game once again with 11:16 to play.
Tallies from Zegowitz and Connelly 1 minute, 16 seconds apart gave the Mustangs an 11-9 lead before Stone completed her first career hat trick.
Ferruzzi added five draw control wins while Smith had four for the Green Terror. Ferruzzi also had three caused turnovers.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Swarthmore on Saturday. Game time is 12 p.m.
