Early roll carries Dickinson to first win at McDaniel since 1991, into playoffs
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Amy Jennings recorded eight points on two goals and six assists to lead No. 13 Dickinson to a 21-12 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday.
The Red Devils (10-4, 6-2 CC), who secured the third seed in the upcoming CC playoffs with the victory, got four goals apiece from Kelsey Muir and Alyssa Crellin in their first victory in Westminster since 1991.
Chelsea Ferruzzi (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) netted four goals to pace the Green Terror (8-6, 4-4 CC), who need a victory at Muhlenberg on Saturday to make the five-team conference tournament.
Trailing 1-0 after Ferruzzi won the opening draw and took it straight to goal 14 seconds into the game, Dickinson reeled off nine of the game’s next 10 markers to take a 9-2 lead nearly 11 minutes later.
Sunnie Ko and Larsen tallied 20 seconds apart to turn the one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead 2 minutes, 30 seconds into the game.
Stephanie Sudbrook (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) knotted the game for the final time with 4;12 elapsed before Larsen hit on the second of her three goals 25 seconds later.
Muir sandwiched Crellin’s first two tallies to stretch the lead to 6-2.
Ko finished the second of Jennings’ helpers at the 9:54 mark before Jennings and Crellin pushed the lead to seven with 18:51 remaining in the first half.
Lisa Jurd (Columbia, Md./Hammond) and Ferruzzi finished solo runs to pull the hosts within 9-4 at the 12:53 mark.
After Muir made it a 12-6 game 1:46 before the intermission, she completed her four-goal afternoon 1:37 on the other side of the break to start a 5-0 start to the second half.
Abby Larson and Lexie Kolb each converted free-position shots before Crellin and Dana Bunting made it a 17-6 advantage with fewer than 20 minutes to play.
Trailing 20-9, Kerrie Wuenschel (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) and Brittany Baer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) tallied 1:27 apart to trim the deficit to single digits with 4:32 to play.
Lucy West and Ferruzzi exchanged goals in the final four minutes to set the final margin.
Crellin added 10 draw controls wins for the Red Devils, who held a 24-10 advantage in that category as a team.
