Fast start carries McDaniel past Muhlenberg, into CC playoffs

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Jennifer Stone (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) recorded a career-high 10 points on four goals and six assists to lead McDaniel to a 22-19 win over Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.
Brittany Baer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) added five goals, two assists and five draw controls for the Green Terror (9-6, 5-4 CC), who secured a playoff berth with the victory. By virtue of goal differential in a three-way tie with the Mules (11-4, 5-4 CC) and Ursinus, McDaniel earned the tournament’s fourth seed and will host Muhlenberg in the first round on Wednesday. Game time will be determined on Monday.
The winner of Wednesday’s game advances to the CC semifinals against third-ranked Franklin & Marshall, who earned the top seed with a 10-8 win over No. 4 Gettysburg.
Ruth Morrongiello paced the Mules with five goals and six draw controls.
Lisa Jurd (Columbia, Md./Hammond) scored off a pass from Stone just 13 seconds into play. Tallies from Baer and Kelly Scheler (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) stretched the lead to 3-0 at the 2:17 mark before back-to-back Muhlenberg tallies made it a 3-2 game just a minute later.
Kerrie Wuenschel (Sykesville, Pa./South Carroll) sparked an 8-2 run over the next 11 minutes, 51 seconds. Wuenschel, Stone, Baer and Chelsea Ferruzzi (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown), Kerrie Wuenschel (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) accounted for the McDaniel goals, scoring two apiece. Stone added two assists while Bear had one during the stretch.
Trailing 15-7 at the intermission, Amanda McGovern tallied 47 seconds into the second period before Stone and Baer pushed the lead back to nine.
Three Morrongiello markers keyed a 4-0 run to pull the hosts within 17-12 before the Green Terror tallied five of the game’s next seven to open up a 22-14 lead before the Mules tallied the final five for the final margin.
Leanne Hollinger (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) recorded 16 saves in goal for McDaniel.
