Big second half carries McDaniel to 13-7 win over Messiah in home opener
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Brittany Baer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) tallied seven goals and an assist to lead McDaniel to a 13-7 victory over Messiah in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday.
Bear, who has 11 goals in her first two games with the Green Terror (2-0), became the first player to tally seven times in a contest in six seasons. Chelsea Ferruzzi (Jekintown, Pa./Jenkintown) added two goals and two assists while Kerrie Wuenschel (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) added a pair of markers.
Jessica Van Hook netted three goals of her own for the Falcons (0-1), including two in a first half that ended deadlocked at 3-all.
Knotted at 4-all just over four minutes into the second half, Baer tallied her fourth goal of the game at the 4:52 mark to a start a six-goal flurry that stretched the lead to 10-4 fewer than seven minutes later.
Eleven seconds after Baer’s marker, Lindsey McDonald (Germantown, Md./Damascus) finished a Ferruzzi feed before tallied her 37 seconds later.
At the 36:36 mark, Wuenschel notched her second goal of the day before Ferruzzi and Bear finished solo runs to stretch the lead to six.
Jackie Dando tallied 1 minute, 36 seconds apart to cut the deficit to 10-6 before Ferruzzi and Shaena Smith (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) hit the back of the net to re-establish the six-goal advantage.
Van Hook and Baer exchanged goals in the final five minutes for the final margin.
Wuenschel and Baer made it a 2-0 McDaniel lead 11 minutes into the game before Van Hook bookended a three-goal flurry to Messiah its only lead, 3-2.
Baer tallied on either side of intermission to give the Green Terror a one-goal lead before Bethany Moskevitz knotted the game for the final time with 25:57 to play.
Sarah White (Lincoln, Del./Cape Henlopen) made 10 saves in net to pick up the win while Jen Venter made 19 stops at the other end.
Baer picked up five ground balls while Ferruzzi led the way with three draw controls for McDaniel, who finished with a 41-21 advantage in the shot column.
The Green Terror returns to action at Goucher on Friday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
