No. 19 McDaniel explodes in second half for wild 19-13 win over Catholic
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Freshman Kelly Scheler (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright), who entered the game with one goal in her first three games, tallied four goals and an assist in McDaniel’s 19-13 victory over Catholic in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Thursday.
Kate Robinson tallied six goals for the Cardinals (4-2), who held a 7-3 lead midway through the first half before the 19th-ranked Green Terror (4-0) reeled off 14 of the game’s next 16 markers to take a 17-9 lead with 7:16 to play, including all of Brittany Baer’s (Westminster, Md./Westminster) team-high six goals.
With her team trailing 8-5, Scheler, who started the second half after not playing at all in the first half, scored 3 minutes, 7 seconds into the stanza to start a stretch that saw McDaniel put together a 12-1 run in fewer than 20 minutes.
After Scheler finished her solo run, Kerrie Wuenschel (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) tallied the fourth of her five goals off a Lindsey McDonald (Germantown, Md./Damascus) feed 35 seconds later, pulling the hosts within one.
Robinson responded with a goal at the 38:57 mark to push the lead back to 9-7 before Baer converted the first of the Green Terror’s program record eight free-position goals at 42:52, sparking a 10-goal explosion in a 9-minute, 52-second span.
Chelsea Ferruzzi (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown), who finished with two goals and two assists, finished a Wuenschel assist 30 seconds later to knot the game before Scheler centered a pass to Shaena Smith (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll), who gave McDaniel the lead for good at the 43:46 mark.
At the 45:15 mark, Scheler converted the first of four consecutive free-position attempts over the next 5:28 to push the lead to 14-9.
Eleven seconds after Baer finished the stretch, Scheler finished a Ferruzzi draw control win-and-pass. At the 51:41 mark, it was Baer who finished the Ferruzzi feed.
Baer capped the run with a free-position goal 1 minute, 3 seconds later.
The Cardinals tallied four of the game’s next five goals to pull within 18-13 with 2:15 to play before Baer converted the final of 18 free-position attempts with 7.2 seconds to play for the final margin.
Wuenschel sandwiched a Robinson marker, giving McDaniel a 2-1 lead 4:20 into the contest.
With 5:07 elapsed, Marcy Cuneo sparked a four-goal flurry by four different Cardinals to take a 5-2 lead at the 9:38 mark.
McDonald pulled the hosts within 5-3 but Laura Haring and Kate Narzikul stretched the lead back to 7-3 before Wuenschel and Baer closed the deficit to 7-5 at the intermission,
Robinson made it an 8-5 game 1:39 into the second half before the Green Terror started its rally.
In a physical game that saw 83 total fouls called, including 57 by Catholic, McDaniel finished with a 37-31 advantage in shots, including nearly doubling up Catholic in the second half (24-13). Ferruzzi won six of the Green Terror’s 17 draw controls while Michelle Fluty (Huntingtown, Md./Calvert) won four.
McDaniel returns to action at home against top-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Game time is 12 p.m.
