Two quick strikes propels Villa Julie to 2-1 win over McDaniel
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Rose Phelan and Tonia Cristino scored 1 minute, 31 seconds apart to stake Villa Julie to a 2-0 lead en route to a 2-1 victory over McDaniel in non-conference women’s soccer action on Tuesday.
Brittany Baer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) scored the lone goal for the Green Terror (1-9), who were doubled up in the shot category 16-8 by the Mustangs (6-4) in the squad’s fifth one-goal defeat of the season.
With 11:13 elapsed, Phelan converted Villa Julie’s first shot of the game, taking advantage of Leanne Hollinger (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) being out of the box, finishing a quick feed left from Allison Humphries.
In the 13th minute, Cristino floated the Mustangs’ second shot of the game top shelf for a 2-0 lead.
In the game’s 54th minute, Sarah Wallace (Gosheen, Mass./Hampshire Regional) played a long pass forward to Baer, who beat Casey Brown to cut the deficit in half.
Hollinger made seven saves while Brown had three. Each team took one corner kick.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Notre Dame (Md.) on Thursday. Game time is 4 p.m.
