Franklin & Marshall convert pair of corner kicks to down McDaniel, 2-1
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Athena Manolakos had a hand in both goals, recording a goal and an assist to lead Franklin & Marshall to a 2-1 win over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s soccer action on Saturday.
The Diplomats (6-3-2, 3-2 CC) converted two of their six second-half corner kicks into goals, including the one that Manolakos hooked into the net for the game-winner.
Leanne Hollinger (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) recorded 13 saves in goal for the Green Terror (2-10, 1-3 CC), who dropped its sixth one-goal game of the season.
Knotted a 1, Manolakos set up for Franklin & Marshall’s seventh and final corner kick of the afternoon on the left corner. Booting the ball deep into the box, it hooked over Hollinger’s head and into the upper-right corner for a 2-1 advantage at the 84:07 mark.
After a scoreless first half despite 17 combined shots, including 14 by the Diplomats, Michelle Shea finally converted the game’s first goal in the 62nd minute.
On the second of two straight corners, Manolakos floated the ball into the middle of the box where Shannon Summers flicked the ball to her left, allowing Shea to collect it on her foot and find the back of the net.
However, McDaniel countered just 1 minute, 42 seconds later when Brittany Bear (Westminster, Md./Westminster) beat her defender and placed the ball in the left side of the net for her team-leading eighth goal of the year.
The Diplomats finished with a 29-5 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Erin Roy made one save for Franklin & Marshall.
The Green Terror returns to action at Dickinson on Wednesday. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
